well to answer your first question, South American plate boundary is part of the ring of fire which there is a lot of hot spots there for a lot of volcanism.

http://www.platetectonics.com/book/page_12.asp explains subduction's zones which is the movement of older oceanic (Earth's Crust) plates into younger plates and goes under the younger plates causing volcanic activity.

It is possible for the crust to move because of plate tectonics. between seafloor spreading, divergin, convergin, subduction, and Lateral, or Transform faults, all involve the movement of the Earth's crust.

Continental drift is an educated theory. believable because of seafloor spreading and how the mountain ranges aligned when you put the continents together.
