I am not a coin collecter but I think that I may have a valueable "wheat back" penny, dated 1944 D. How can I find out, without going through "HELL-N-BACK", just to find out what it may or may not be worth?

The 1944-D cent had a mintage of 430,578,000 and is far from scarce or rare. It can be bought from .02 to .05 in a coin dealers wheat cent box. There is however a 1944 D over S which trends for $50 in grade good and going up the circulated grade scale to extra fine trends for $300. So if your coin has an S under the D then it has value if not then it is not worth much, here again is a coin with more historic value than monetary one. It is a coin from World War II during the year the U.S. finally got the upper hand. Who knows it may have been in a womens pocket, as she built a tank or B-29 bomber.

1944-D is a common date. Four hundred thirty million were minted. Unless it's in Brilliant Uncirculated (brand new) condition, you'll have difficulty getting more than one cent for it. Sorry.

It's a common date as mentioned above and dealers sell each common for around 3 cents. I paid about 2 cents each to fill up my jar, mostly from year 40s to 50s.
