The Senate passed the Matthew Shepard Act. Now it must pass a House and Senate conference comittee, and then be signed into law by the President. Three fourths of the population is in favor of this law, but few of them will contact their representatives to communicate their support. Mostly, the representatives will hear a message of hate, fear, and predjudice from the religous right wing.
If you care about justice and the right of all people to live free from the fear of hate and violence, you can write to your representatives in the House and Senate and to the President to communicate your support for the Matthew Shepard bill and to demand that it become law.
To find out who your representatives are, try: www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml

If the President vetos this bill, it can still pass with enough support in Congress! Please make you voice heard very loudly!

The Matthew Shepard Act sends a strong message to America!!
It is hard to fathom why anyone would be against legislation for funding local law enforcement, District Attorneys and other investigative and prosecutorial efforts protecting citizens from, and to solve, violent crimes.
Although the bill includes categories related to race, color, religion, national origin, disability, gender, as other non-discrimination laws do, it also contains, 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity.' -- It is these terms that have religious extremists (and George W. Bush) up in arms.
By issuing a veto threat, President George W. Bush fails to understand that he is not the sole decider regarding the 'Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act'.

Bush the candidate of 2000 wanted to reach out as the compassion conservative. Just code words of Karl Rove tow in the election. Bush gives lip service to gay community has little concern for the community. Did he not try have amendment to the constitution to ban gay marriage? The sooner this man is out the white house the better of this country will be.

I'm Gay and very sorry about what happened to Matthew Shepherd, but I oppose this legislation, it sends the wrong message.
Join the Pink Pistols and give some Gay Bashers the Matthew Shepherd treatment and that will send the right message. We need to stop being victims and start being the predators.

The House passed in it March 2007. Now with passing in The Senate I would "dare" Bush to veto it. Thanks for the web pages....!

You know, I'm a religious right winger, and I think what happened to him was evil and horrible too. Why do you think that just because he was gay, what do you think, we APPLAUDED his murder?? You obviously have no friends or family that are "right minded" and have never known good hearted people like the religious right... you think you know our hearts based only on what the left tells you. Please try to get to know someone like me..

I care about justice, That is why I wrote my congressman to express my distaste for the Matthew Shepherd Law. It is a travesty. Mattthew Shepherd's death wan't a hate crime, as reported by the liberal media. It was a botched mugging by a part time homosexual prostitute who decided to mug his customer instead of having sex with him. This information came out in the trial and was suppressed by the media. Matthew Shepherd was a gay man mugged and murdered by another gay man.Read the trial transcripts yourself and know the truth.
