As much as I dislike the term "classic rock" on principle, there are loads of '60s and '70s bands that don't get enough recognition. Budgie, Blue Cheer, Captain Beefheart, Electric Flag, Spirit, The Count Five, pretty much every Krautrock band (Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Amon Düül II, Tangerine Dream, Faust, etc.), Cactus, Sparks, Hawkwind, Roxy Music, Suicide, Silver Apples, Camel, Wire, Shoes, Rose Tattoo, The Boomtown Rats, Midnight Oil, The Sonics, Throbbing Gristle, and tons more.

Excellent question! Several veteran groups in Classic Rock are little-promoted: Bachmann-Turner Overdrive, Thin Lizzy, Cream, Chicago, and Lighthouse all come to mind, but the big one was Boston--Epic-Legacy Records Division, CBS (now part of Sony Music Entertainment US Inc.) dumped them when the third album stumped even the bandmembers themselves and wasn't ready until the late 1980's, by which time Boston signed with MCA Records (now part of Universal Music Group) to release it.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers. Still touring, and still recording (check out the new release of Bad to the Bone with re-recorded versions of the old songs). "The Hard Stuff," released in 2006, is one of their best CDs.
