You got it right on the money Doc M. We supposedly have a two party system, so we're a democracy where our votes and thoughts count, right?

Wrong.

Both parties represent the corporations that feed them first, the upper middle class and upper classes from whom they come, second and the rest of us - a year before election time and not a week after.

This wrangle of "Bad Liberals" Bad Conservatgives" is just a ploy to keep us divided while our elected "representaives" feed at the big money trough. You know, "...divided we fall." SO we the poeple are divided agaisnt each other - each waving the flag of their party, like it's the world series when it's just the same team raking in the dough.

If things don't change - I predict a real revolution in this country in 5 to 20 years - or at the first economic collapse, which ever comes first.

P.S. Most Parlimentary Democracies have at least 3 major parties and several smaller ones so that no party usually holds a clear majority. IN that way more people are truely represented because it takes a coaliiton from all the parties to create a majority. For instance: In Germany the Greens are a political party represented in parliment with emnough votes to influence legislation. This is why Europe is taking the lead in the world. Here in the USA we are lead to beleive that the corporations know best and are content to bow to them. But not in Europe, because the Europeans are sophisticated enough to know that a corporation exists to make profits not insure the continuation of a country, but a Democratic government's job is not to make a profit but insure the continuance of the country and the welfare of the people.

Is this too much for you to think about?

The only governments that are single party are dictatorships, we need to have competing parties to keep our country a democracy so that our country's government can be changed peacefully and prevent politicians from getting to much power. This creates an important element in checks and balances as parties are competing against each other preventing either one from gaining an iron fist. That way our nation will continue to represent the peoples needs.

Because Republicans don't have it right, either. I vote Republican mainly because of the revisionist approach the Dem's seem to be taking towards the Bill of Rights.

However, I do not favor the Republicans, other than a vote for them is the surest way to keep Dem's out of office.

We are best served when Congress is about half Dem's and half Republicans; then nothing gets done.

And that's fine by me.

You're being terribly happy there in the USA to have only two parties...in our country we have some 6 or 7 parliamentarian parties and it comes to real mess, when one tries to pass some urgent law...
But as I see it, your question is basically about opposition in general...is it really needed, or is it cool to have just one party...
Democracy involves several parties, so if there's only one, the country faces possibility of absolute rule, which is bad, because there's no mechanism to control or block decisions that might be bad...

to confuse people into thinking that we have a democratic 2-party system. if all the politicians had the same title we'd know that they all believe the same thing.

If you did not ever see bad legislation you would not recognize good legislation.

It is like if you never experience pain, you do not know what relief of pain feels like.
