Because after Scarface he realized people really responded to him acting like that. Then he did it again in Scent of a Woman and won an Oscar.

It is so amazing how in The Godfather III he totally didn't act like Michael Corleone. He acted like "post scarface Pacino." Part of the reason why the film sucked.

There are two notable exceptions though. In Donnie Brasco and in The Insider. He did a great job of acting in both.

Good God! You are right! I guess I am so used to Al, and his roles I just expect it and find it normal. Can't answer your question, but you sure made me think! I really like Al Pacino though---maybe he is a little insane???? In a good way.

He doesn't always play characters like that. It just seems that way because those are the only characters he does that get any publicity.

Probably because he does them so well.
