If you turn the heart shape upside down so that the 2 humps are on the bottom and round off the tip, you have a stylized version of women's genitalia. ("lady parts" Britney Spears shows hers off enough so that every one knows the basic shape of girls "down there")
Basically that heart shape is a way for lovers, before internet porn, email, iPhones, and even before regular mail service gave each other "booty calls"
As a way of explaining the blatantly sexual message to a VERY forbidding society, stories were formulated about "true love" and "admiration". Messages were written on them. They would elaborately decorate them with lace, beads and jewels. Sound familiar?

Over the years, the sexual restrictions and taboos loosened, and the old symbols became cartoonish.

the Love heart shape was originally formated by Catholics.
it symbolizes Jesus's heart. Another words that symbol is very old and was made in the medieval times. Dont believe me look it up.

It started long ago. I really have no idea.
But as for what it symbolizes...It is a rather acurate glyph of the buttots as seen from behind... Have someone bend all the way over and ponder the view.
