Dr. E Bunny: She's not comming in when uninvited (as far as I know). What makes me even more uneasy about it is when she is reluctant about giving the key back, then I get even more suspicious.

Call a locksmith and have your locks replaced or changed. Then you will have new keys. You don't even have to tell your parents about it. Why keep asking? They want to keep your key and you don't want them to have it. This satisfies you both! And if they don't actually try to come snooping in your house without your knowledge, they will never even know! If they do and complain, just keep asking them why they were trying to come into your house without permission. BTW: You don't have a key to their house do you?

I was going to say to change the locks but, it may give your parents some sense of ease just having it. However, if you're worried about them letting themselves in while you're busy with your significant other, add a dead bolt requiring a second key to undo it. If they ask if you're going to give them the key to it, "I've already lost one. When I get around to it."
If you have your heart set on getting that key back, show up in a hurry and say you broke you key off in the door and need that one to make a duplicate. Just take your key off the ring and put it in your shoe so they don't accidently see it and you don't accidently lose it. Oh, you can say you got the broken key out but need the whole one to get a duplicate.

Do they own the house? Why do they have it and what are their excuses for not giving it back?

I would just mention to them that you're going to be changing the locks, and then just go ahead and do it. Even if they give it back, they could pay a couple of bucks and get a copy of it. If they're not returning it because they've lost it, then you should probably change those locks anyway.

Oh wow. There's unwanted drama.

I think the only way to get around this one to tell a little white lye. Say you lost your keys and need theirs. Or say you lost your key and had to change the locks. That way, you can change the locks without giving the impression that you don't want them to have a key.

Are they coming in when they want to?

Best thing is not to ask any more and just get a new lock. Perhaps they lost the key somewhere, and you cannot be too careful with your outside doors and such.

If it's only for one door, you could change the lock. But is your parent liable to enter your house without your permission? If so, Then that demands an attorney to get key back for you.

Call them up one day and tell them you can't get into your house b/c you lost your key and you reeeeally have to pee. Ask them to come over and unlock your door...when they do, grab the key like you are trying to hurry and get the door open. Or, you could be grown up and tell them you want your key to YOUR house back...no excuses.

I agree just change the locks and be done with it. If they don't like it, then too bad. And I also agree you should change the locks to ensure any copies that were made are useless also.
