there arent many people around me that have dogs so when she meets one she gets very timid and when the other dog approaches she starts to back away and if they get too close she starts to snarl.. plus i dont know why but she really gets scared of people when they try to pet her [they approach her gently too].. its so wierd shes quite friendly but in the beginning she gets so timid ..plus when people come over she gets very territorial and shuts up when they feed her a treat lol.. i guess its a service fee for entering the house =).. anyway to help her feel less scared and so timid all the time?

Actually like people, dogs have different personalities too! My German Shepherd was/is"ish" the same way. We got her at a very young age and trust in us was slow. As she grew she became very territorial towards my family and great at guarding us and our property. We began to bring her to parks by the children which un-nerved her, but she now will actually let people walk right by her without growling, and sometimes even pet her if they show no signs of threatening her. As far as the person who answered second, vet or not you need to learn more about personalities in animals. Just because your a vet doesn't make you an animals therapist lol. Also jumping to conclusion that he beats his dog is a very ignorant thing to do. My dog in her first home as a pup before weaning and in my home after being weaned has never been beat, or even close to it. Judge yourself before judging others ;)

Use obedience commands to make her feel more secure when she gets nervous. "Sit" and "stay" followed by a treat should distract her from being nervous.
Take her out for walks where people are, and when somebody wants to pet her or talk to her, ask them to give her a treat. (Carry treats with you.) Also give her a treat when you see another dog. This will make her feel like seeing a dog is a good thing.
Have people come to your house; have the visitor give her a treat.
Don't let her snarl; if she does, tell her NO or TSSS and make her sit, then tell her she's a good dog when she obeys.

My dog was so shy he used to sit and show his teeth and shiver when he saw a stranger, and also snarl and snap at people. He was badly abused before I got him. Now he likes most people and dogs. Some things I did. Took him to a large obedience class where there were a lot of people and dogs to meet. I took him with me as many places as I could and when ever someone talked I would give them a treat to give him. Also I think getting him neutered helped. I take him on long walks so he is tired.
PS Mine is a Pomeranian.

that is a normal cocker response! The only why of breaking them of that is lot s of socialization with and without you and lots of patience.

When you are with your pup ignore them and pay attention to the other people or dogs. When they aren't with you make sure it is a safe experienced enivornment.

Im a vet. so i think she was either abused as a puppy or she thinks everyone is going to hurt her because you always hit her. you should never hit a dog!
