The residency requirement is only that you be a US citizen.

You do NOT have to declare a party.

You can register by mail or even online.

How long depends on your district, but usually 60 or even 30 days is plenty of time.

If you are already registered and still live in the same district you don't have to re-register at all.

You are registered for life unless your address or name changes.

Most states require you to register before some time in October. You only have to show proof of residency . You only have to declare a party if you wish to vote in the primary. That party affiliation has nothing to do with whom you vote for in the general election. Registration requirement vary from state to state.
