Environmentalism.

One of two possible things:

1) Environmentalists supposedly "love" the environment, and therefore would hug trees because trees are a primary symbol of nature.

2) Environmental activists have stood in the way of developers trying to cut down certain types of trees or trees in certain areas. The idea was that they wrapped their arms around the tree to protect it.

In reality, few people spend any time whatsoever hugging trees. It's used as sort of an insulting joke against liberals and environmentalists.

In my opinion it started in India. Why do I say this? I've read a book one time of an East Indian natural practitioner that speak of something about an "aura" of a tree. It is some sort of an energy field surrounding a tree (as in humans too). He said that if someone, depending on their physical status, lean or hug a tree they will feel relief. (A specific tree for a specific condition).

The first time I heard this saying about tree hugging was many years ago from the hit song by Tommy James & The Shondells, " Draggin The Line "

Tree hugging came from advise for those who are not good in the woods. When some one gets lost it is way easier to find them if they just stay in one place. Hence it was advised for them to find a tree and hug it until found.
