Because statistically, in the US, more women are fat than not. Couple that on top of insecure, media driven people, and it's the most popular topic of conversation.

I'm with Kate on this one. The fashion industry has an impact on what is considered beautiful. Some women are paranoid about becoming fat. Being fat means being at risk for ridicule. Also studies show that men are much less tolerant than women to have overweight dating partners. I've been both fat and thin and I can say from experience that people treated me better when I was thin.

Because we're our worst critics, and even more than that, we're other women's worst critics. A lot of times, women worry more about their looks around other women than they do around men. Girls pick each other to pieces! Also, some women say they're fat all the time b/c they are fishing for compliments, which drives me insane! My sister is the world's worst about doing this! She is 5'8" and weighs 125 lbs., which is absolutely the perfect weight, if not a tad low, for her height! I on the other hand am 5'7" and weigh 150 lbs. She loves when people talk about how skinny she is, and I could care less. I'm just much more confident in who I am than she is. It's basically just a self-esteem issue. If it gets on your nerves, then you should never entertain a girl's complaint about her weight! She will quit making comments if you just ignore it. However, if she asks you if she looks fat, act irritated, and say something like, "you know you're not fat" then completely change the subject. It really is annoying, but the basis of it all leads back to them being unsure of themselves.

Because, unlike chocolate cake, the truth and associated facts are often hard to swallow.
Self-image is a big concern for a lot of Women. Those who can handle being natural have not the slightest problem with Their shape. We should all blame cultural 'norms' for body shape perceptions rather than to try and bolster the frail Female ego by demanding lies from those we concider friends and loved ones.

(Yes I am carrying a few extra pounds around the midsection.....and so what? When asked about My weight 'problem' I reply that I am not overweight, but rather that My stomach is showing solidarity with pregnant women!)

Because there are a lot of people that are fat. nearly 30% are obese. I don't recall what % are just over weight.
Men and women need to be concerned about this.
While this is a problem now, just wait another 20 years. This is going to be our biggest problem.

Because the media promotes thin women in a major way, which not only influences women but also tells men that it's the way a woman should be. It's sad when a woman feels her self-worth is determined by her size.

I don't know. But it drives me nuts because I'm too thin and would love to have a body like those girls that complain about being too fat. When they definitly aren't fat usually.

It gives us that moral support we need to keep on eating only about 1400 calories every day while the men in our lives eat twice that much and then give us "the look" if we eat dessert. It is the mantra that drives us to vigilance. If you stop complaining about the fat, that means you really have become fat...
Whoa, that sounds pretty psycho, doesn't it?
