In 1972 a group of men broke into the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. They were apprehended by police and all pled guilty to the charge of burglary or lesser offenses. All went to federal prison for varying amounts of time. President Nixon had a system installed in the White House which permitted taping of all conversations. A later release of the tapes showed that he and his aides were involved in a conspiracy to buy the silence of the burglars and thwart any further investigation by the Justice Department. In the process, Nixon fired two attorneys-general who refused to go along with stopping further investigations. The Congress responded by having the House Judiciary Committe hold hearings to determine if articles of impeachment against the President should be passed by the House. The committee did approve one article of impeachment. Following that decision, President Nixon resigned from office and was succeeded by Gerald Rudolph Ford.

There were so many things that everyone tried to cover up, they just slipped up somewhere along the line and all the crap went down-hill, piling up at the end.

There were at least five Navy Admirals and, Marine Officers that had a boatload of weapons from Viet Nam that were in the process of trading them for drugs, with South America.
Ollie North was caught in the middle of a mess he made for himself and, turned States evidence, turning everyone in from the F.B.I. to the C.I.A. in the "Golden Triangle" drug trade and Arms trade with South Americas biggest cartels.

Nixon himself had prior knowledge about all this and did or said nothing. In the end, heads rolled but, unevenly, accordingly to how popular you were it was said.

How much of all this was true? we'll never know for sure but, a lot of good men paid the price. Nixon wasn't one of them.

The scandal was the cover up. Nixon could have weathered it if he didn't obstruct justice in the case.
