Hi,
Earlier this year, I researched this exact same question for Ask Yahoo! and found that Sea-Monkeys are simply a type of brine shrimp.
They grow to between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch but look nothing like the "naked humanoids once displayed in the product's kitschy comic-book advertisements."
The official Sea Monkey site explains that they were given the name because, like monkeys, "they have tails and their playful behavior is (apparently) reminiscent of primates."
Check out the second link below for an in-depth "fan site" on Sea Monkeys. It will answer every question you could possibly have (and then some).

Betta fish food.
Lol.
My best friend had some, and put them in the tank with her betta to see what would happen....
It was murderous.
They are kinda cute though, it's cool to see them come to life from seemingly nothing.

They are actually very tiny shrimp.
With adorable little crowns, judging by the packaging.
