There's an old saying, if a girl sells sex outside of marriage, its called prostitution, if she sells it inside of marriage, its called an institution
One argument against prostitution being legalized is that it is unconscionable
Rich people in the civil war were able to pay poor people to take their place when drafted, ( by proxie ) this was later made illegal because it was argued that money should not pay for certain favors even tho the other person agrees to it
Al Gore sponsored the legislation in the 80's that made it illegal to sell body organs to rich people who needed transplants
The bottom line is that certain things shouldn't be for sale
I do think prudish people do make too big a deal about prostitution but then again, prostitution does tend to exploit the poor and the very young
Young attractive teen girls get overwhelmed by the pressure of men with money, in some ways its like young men with outstanding athletic ability who get bombarded with attention if they are football or basketball stars...it goes to their head...money gets thrown at them as draft picks, they're too immature to handle all the attention and money and their lives get screwed up

For those of you talking about women when it comes to prostitution, we don't just have women prostitutes, we have male, she-male and male-she prostitutes too.
I don't think it should be illegal. Slutty people are generally more friendly, just a little bit too friendly sometimes. And if we didn't have prostitutes many of us wouldn't get laid. Yes, they spread disease, but if we didn't have prostitution, people would be having sex anyway, and that spreads disease. The drug culture of society spreads disease, because it suppresses immune systems.
It doesn't destroy the moral fabric of society. Europeans are much less hung up about sex that in the U.S.A. and out morals aren't any better than theirs, we just pretend like they are. Moral? Have you seen how some Mormons live? What's moral about forced marriages and forcing a 14 year old girl to marry a man she doesn't want to that could be anywhere from 5 to 20 years her senior or more? Where I come from that's statutory rape.
People with bad hygiene and nutrition habits or lack thereof spread disease. Sex doesn't have to be in the equation. So the disease spreading argument that people try to fling is quite moot.
Making prostitution illegal is generally a moral issue. And why the double standards? It's legal in Nevada but not in the rest of the country. Proof that's it's not one country (U.S.A.) It's a cluster of over 50 countries or provinces together in name only.
At one time in early history prostitution was legal throughout the entire U.S.A. That's where the term "hooker" comes from. It was the last name of an officer who openly used their services and allowed his soldiers to do so too.How do you think all those officers, generals and soldiers got laid while on the battlefield. They sure weren't wankin' each other, although some of them were, cause they didn't like women sexually or exclusively. STDs of soldier population was over 40% back then...pretty scary.
Also if prostitution isn't legal then why is pornography legal? That's a form of prostitution. And if it's so bad, then why do people contribute to it in the billions of dollars each year?

IT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE ADAM AND EVE.
I ONCE HAD A MADAM IN COURT AND ASKED HER WHY SHE GOT INTO THAT LINE OF BUSINESS WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE (PHD)?
HER REPLY WAS " DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BUSINESSMAN AND A PROSTITUTE'? i SAID NO BUT I THINK I AM GOING TO FIND OUT. SHE SAID"THE BUSINESS MAN SAYS IT IS A PLEASURE DOING BUSINESS WITH YOU."
THE PROSTITUTE SAYS"IT'S BEEN A BUSINESS DOING PLEASURE WITH YOU."
ILLEGAL BECAUSE OF SOCIAL MORAL VALUES. WOMEN WHO ARE IN A SITUATION OF SELLING THEIR WEARS ARE CONSIDERED DOWN AND OUT BY SOCIETY. IT IS JUST NOT SOMETHING ONE DOES BY CHOICE. OR IS IT. MOST TRICKSTERS ARE HANDLED BY PIMPS AND HUSTLERS WHO WE SEE EVERYDAY ON THE CORNER OF SKID ROAD.
THE HIGH CLASS PROSTITUTE IS FLOWN IN BY JET AND IS A 25,000 A NIGHT GODDESS. SO WHERE IS THE DIFFERENCE.
MONEY AND CLASS DEFINITION.
IF THE PLACE RUNNING A PROSTITUTION RING / CALL GIRLS / FEMALE ESCORTS????WHATEVER HAS THE WOMEN SCREENED FOR ANY DISEASES AND THE CLIENTS FOR ANY DISEASES ALSO THEN ALL SHOULD BE THE SAME BETWEEN CONSENTING ADULTS.
IT IS AN AGE OLD ART. IT IS ILLEGAL BECAUSE SO MANY ARE DOING IT FOR DRUG MONEY OR A PIMPS SHARE. AGAIN YOU HAVE YOUR LOW CLASS PROSTITUTE AND YOUR HIGH CLASS MADAM OR ESCORT. NOW TELL ME WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

"And if we didn't have prostitutes many of us wouldn't get laid."
And some of us aren't, because of prostitutes. My husband lost his sex drive -- with me anyway -- after his coworkers started taking him to strip clubs. The ones around here are well known as brothels, particularly the one he went to. He admitted to being offered sex by the strippers he was lavishing cash on (you don't want to see the size of our credit card debt, either) though claims he didn't follow up on it; and moved out over a year ago when I discovered all this. It isn't because of me -- I've since been hit on by three friends (awkward, you'd think as friends they'd not be trying to get involved like that) and flirted with by a couple strangers. And yes, I make it clear I'm hoping to patch up the marriage (what a yutz, I know), so, "thanks, but no thanks".
Personally I say fine, they want to sell themselves or buy other people, let 'em do it, tax it up. What I want though is for prostitutes and their customers to be well known, so people without that bent to use other people won't get sucked in and used too (or if they do, at least they get fair warning up front).

The oldest profession. As long as there are geeks, dweebs, pervs, and the sexual needy there will be people willing to meet their needs in exchange for financial consideration (whether in cash or trade).
Since prostitution is the elephant in the living room, at least clean it up and make it functional. Unionize those working girls, give the soiled doves a health plan, but mostly make it easy to report abuse (violence should never be part of the equation) without jeopardy to themselves. License them, and only allow licensed pros to work at their trade. In order to obtain a license, they should have to be examined on a regular basis and be certified that they are in good health and disease free. Set up a sliding fee scale across the board (sort of like the way the milk board does with milk/cheese prices) based on service rendered and tax them buggers. Al Capone couldn't get away with not paying taxes on his bootlegging income, why should the pros get away with it.

It should be legalized. There should be some regulation with regard to health issues and locations, etc.
I think it's illegal primarily because of the moral issues involved. Not something the government should be involved with. They tend to think they own your body, not you.
I can understand a persons moral objections to prostitution. With that said, if you have an objection to it, don't visit one.

It is wrong because the girl is basically telling the world that she does not care for her own body and she has no right to cry if she gets beat up. She did sell her body. It gives the buyer every right to do what he wants with her.

Prostitution causes all of the following negative effects:
- Spreads disease
- Causes corruption
- Disrupts the moral fabric of our society
- Promotes immorality
- etc....
I do feel it should be illegal because -- THINK about it!! --- men using a woman for SEX... PAYING HER to have sex with them.... ewww... It is just WRONG!!!
Just my own personal thoughts.....
