Smoke - combustion byproducts. Also I tend to think of the elements of Fire and Air and the smoke of incense and sacred herbs smoldering in a burner. In the Circle, smoke is a purifying agent and gives off a pleasing scent to Godess and God and the other spirits that are called forth into the Circle.
