Find a local newspaper or radio station that doesn't have a critic, then write a letter pitching your services (and send copies of your writing). I did this back in 1989, and it's led to all kinds of other opportunities, including a long-running website.

Just don't expect to make a lot of money...the perks are great but the pay is minimal unless you live in a big city.

For movie critic, you'd probably need some sort of degree in film. For historian, you'd need an advanced degree in history.
