going from east to west? What might make travel from east to west less difficult today?

When traveling south to north, a person could sail the Nile. As to what might make travel from east to west less difficult today? the railroad, I would imagine.

The river nile flows from south to north and people would have found it easier to go with the flow.
To go in the opposite direction they could use sailing vessels because the wind is nearly always north to south.
East to west is all desert but there are now good roads.

Now there is the Suez canal - however really that run parrall to the Nile with only a slight westward bend. However traffic from the East can get tot he west easier via the canal
