I would imagine if you went to the American consular office in Ha Noi, or HCMC, you might be able to find some information on the US educational system - but it may focus on universities.
You should use google, that will provide you with lots of information.
If you are studying English with an American teacher, s/he should be willing to talk about the US educational system - as diverse as it is.
We have 12 grades, just as in Viet Nam. The system of education though is very different. The English text books I have seen in Ha Noi (I work with a Vietnamese English teacher and her students) have some significant differences (and sometimes some siginificant errors). The method of teaching in Viet Nam is very different from the US. You have more memorization.

Well, our ranking in the WESTERN WORLD is not very good until you get to the COLLEGE level.
Japanese families WILL NOT let their kids go to either our PUBLIC or PRIVATE schools.
We might be better than your system, then again we might not.
We're not sure how we view you, we tend to view you as BACKWARDS but that can be a false premis.
Some, not all, kids who graduate High School think DENMARK is a city and can't solve 0.1 of 10 =?
This is not indicitive of everyone. About 10% of our graduates are VERY SHARP
Most of those kids, however, are Middle Eastern or Asian and come from families with a value system.
There IS a lot of prejudice and YOU would face it as a Vietnamse
I mean, I was in that war and I have problems with Vietnam making goods for us under that "commie" system.
We don't feel good about "commies"
No offense
It's an American tradition that goes back to the 1950s
That's why we have IN GOD WE TRUST on our money
I don't want you to feel bad as a person, it's the system we don't like much
In our system we can say President Bush Sucks the Big One and no one cares
In your system can you say the Commie Leader sucks the big one and get away with it publically!
That's our definition of the system
We can CALL our leaders to the CARPET for things
Can you say MAO sucked the big one and live free!
I don't care if it's right or wrong, can you say it publically.
We can bring BUSH or the COURTS or CONGRESS down verbally
No one cares, it's our right
It's our right to say HO CHI MIN sucks the BIG ONE and we can say it in a loud voice
Now, you don't say what age your are
But the top 10% of our schools do Trigonometry and even Calculus by age 17
They do MATH CHemistry and Physics
But that's just to cream off the top
70% couldn't find Vietnam on a map if their lives depended on it!
I don't even think I could and I was DRAFTED into that WAR!
I mean I could CIRCLE and area that include LAOS, CAMBODIA and VIETNAM, but I don't think I, personally, could FIND your country on a map!
Neither could MOST us students
So how are you doing
Can you find US on the map!

There are many philosophies on education in the USA. Many small communities, private or charter schools and much controversy as to when to start children in formal education or what to teach. Luckily parents can make that decision and have more choices than ever.
The public schools vary as well, depending on the communities they serve; rural or urban.
Many parents start their children at 3 or 4 years old in a day care or a pre-school. There are hundreds of kinds for whatever you are looking for. Usually you pay for that opportunity.
Other parents wait until kindergarden= age 5 or 6years old.
1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,grade (sometimes 6th) is called elementary and 7th and 8th Junior High School.
9th-12th;High School then college or university.
School is mandatory until 16 yrs old.

Do you mean you would like a complete description of the American education system from kindergarten up in a Yahoo!Answer? That's ridiculous.
But I will tell you that American education sometimes begins with pre-school.
