First answerer is right, have a listen to Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, any album, because he set the standard for Bluegrass by creating the sound.

Bluegrass Rules - Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, they carry on the tradition of bluegrass but with a great style! For a mix of styles ranging from traditional to progressive, listen to cuts from just about any album by:
Del McCoury Band
Seldom Scene
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage
Alison Krauss and Union Station
The Bluegrass Album Band
Johnson Mountain Boys
Old and In The Way
Blue Highway
Kane's River
Cherryholmes

There are so many more out there to explore! And go listen to a few shows/open air festivals live if you want a real treat.... watch the stage shows, then wander around afterwards and you'll discover what bluegrass is *really* all about.

I don't really know too much,I'm not too much into it( but I have a friend who's into bluegrass). I have an album that he has, and that I like, and I also got one for my little nephew(he's 2), it's called "Not For Kids Only" by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.

Start with Bill Monroe.
He's the grandfather of bluegrass.

Alison Krauss is very good and versatile bluegrass. Ad she's easy on the eyes, too.

The soundtrack for the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" is a good introduction to that type of music.
