in order to avoid being in trouble, say something like,"sorry, i couldnt hear you because SOME people were TALKING...." and look over in another area
of course, this doesnt work if actually no one was talking

All the time. It was often in AP English class last year. My teacher in that class used to be a drill sergeant in the army, and he knew when you weren't paying attention. Even thought he wasn't very tall, he sure was scary! I learned really quick to pay attention in that class!

Yes, then I pretended to not know that I was in college.
Our Psychology class had been studying multiple personality disorders, so I had the ammunition to aggravate my History instructor. All he said was, "I read the book, too."
No one had a clue what we were talking about.
