Most likely you have a hard drive failure. If you install OS from recovery CD for your lap top to desk top some of the drivers will be wrong and you will have to down load the correct ones for every thing to work. Also each copy of Windows XP has a key code which you probably registered, you should check with Microsoft as it may not be legal to use on two computers. You should be able to order a recovery CD from the maker of your computer, I had to order one for one of my lap tops that had a hard drive crash,it cost about $50.00 and was cheaper than buying a new Windows XP soft ware program to Install operating system. You can use the Cd for your lap top to try and install but if hard drive failed it will not install and then replace hard drive and install correct OS.
Hope this helps

To start, no you cannot use your other disk. XP is a registered software and you would not be able to get updates or support.
You say your screen is black, are you sure the monitor is working? Make sure all your connections are good and try another cable if you have one. If you know that the monitor is ok, when you turn the computer on do the fans come on, if not it could be your power supply?
Black screen doesn't usually mean you have to reinstall it more than likely means you have other problems.

Your PC should display POST and read BIOS before it even loads Windows. If it is black screen right from the start and no single beep that signals start of POST, try this:
1. With PC unplugged, reset CMOS through the jumper or by removing CMOS battery (silver coin like) for 30 seconds.
2. Power ON PC. It should beep once and display POST.
3. Press Del or F2 to open BIOS menu.
4. Load Fail-Safe defaults, save and exit. It should boot and load Windows. If Windows fail to load, it could be messed up. The only way to repair it is with the installation disc.

it has to be the one that came with your computer as the one for your laptop more than likely will not have same device drivers on it. i suggest that you contact the manufacturer of you computer to see if you can get a new disk.
