I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is:
http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com
Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.
I hope this helps.

My favorite fantasy series for young adults is by Philip Pullman. The first book is called "The Golden Compass." It is absolutely wonderful and has just been made into a movie starring Nicole Kidman that is coming out this winter. Happy reading!

When I was that age, I read the Myth Series by Robert Asprin. All the books somehow had the word Myth in the title. The first one is called Another Fine Myth.

I agree with Cleopatra: read Pullman's The Golden Compass. If you like that, there are two more books in the trilogy. Enjoy; they're great!
(7th grade is too old for James and the Giant Peach.)
