when finding a melting point, why is it necessary to raise the temperature very slowly when approaching the meltng temperature?

The temperature shoulod stay flat while the substance is melting (if it is a pure substance). If you heat it too fast, you will shoot right through the melting point and start heating the liquid instead.

Depending on your strategy it is very easy to overshoot the melting point especially if using oil immersion and a bunsen burner. I've overshot the melting temp several times in my organic class. It takes some practice to get them right.
