A hydrolysis reaction:
1. breaks molecules apart into smaller pieces
2. uses a parts of molecules of water to bond to the broken off pieces and keep them from going back together

A synthesis reaction:
1. joins molecules together into a bigger molecule
2. removes parts of water molecules from the ends of the original molecules in order to leave bonding sites for the two molecules to stick together. The parts of water molecules are put together to make water.
