Why when I answer certain questions, such as promoting getting married before you have kids, or bringing up the morality of sleeping around with a practical stranger as being bad behavior, why do I get thumbs down? Why are people so against standing up for doing the right thing? Are we so lost in society that we believe we should just do what we want and feels good regardless of the moral and/or ethics of what we are doing?

I'm not saying I do everything honorably or that I take a moral high ground with all my decisions in life, but certain things should still be important, like actually getting married vs. pretending to be before you bring a baby into this world?

Please, I'm seeking honest thoughtful answers. Thanks!

Jolly R. Actually, many times I think I am looking at things from a realistic and common sense approach which is not necessarily exclusive of a moral or ethical approach, but not sure I express myself well...LOL

Logically, you can get thumbs down from the asker, an answerer or a reader. OK, I know that is the whole group but I seperated them this way because my guess is we can discount the readers (those that are not asking nor answering) because very few are just trolling to thumbs up or down. I have noticed that every now and then there is a question that has double digits thumbs downs and that is always because the person was obviously flat out wrong, or wrong in a harmful way or extremely rude but that's not happening to you. I think casual readers do do that. That leaves the asker and the other answerers.

In terms of the asker, your advice is probably what they don't want to hear. What they want to hear is how they can have their cake and eat it to. If it were not a dilema then they would not have asked. You get thumbs down because you have not told them of a moral way to get what they want (which there probably isn't one). But they can only give you one thumbs down. Sometimes that accounts for one thumbs down.

Now answerers thumbs down you for two reasons. First is they could just be gaming the system. Expecting this to go to vote and knowing that many people will not vote for an answer with thumbs down, they answer and then thumbs down every other answer no matter what was said even if they answered it the same way. This is pretty easy to spot so don't let it bother you.

The second reason is that they think you are wrong. Just accept that you would argue the moral stance with this person and have to agree to disagree.

I don't fret 1 + 1/every 5 answers thumbs down marks. A question where I am one of 15 answers, I expect 1-3 thumbs down just because of the point system. But any more than this formula and I too get suspicious that people are truly disagreeing with me and that bothers me a little.

Yea, sometimes I offer up advice in where I have taken a different road or would probably try to have my cake and eat it to but there is the old adage, "Do as I say, not as I do."

It's just a points thing sometime.

Well, you assume that sex is immoral outside of marriage. This is a classic view in our society and of some religions, but on the list of important things, it ranks really low. The reason is that it doesn't hurt anyone, unless the couple have misaligned expectations.

As for getting married before having children, I have divided thoughts, if the couple has been living together for quite awhile and comfortable with out the ceremony, then getting married doesnt matter, conversely if having a child drives them apart it's likely it would have done so if they were married.

I guess from my point of view, the ceremony really does nothing for whether a relationship will work out or not.

Edit, Sorry forgot to comment about the thumb thing. I may or may not thumbs down based on the views you expressed above. I don't mind you having your own morality, but I would certainly prefer it to have a rational reason rather than just a social norm that you're comfortable with. So if it seemed a bit trite or repressive, I'd probably thumbs down it, unless you had a very well thought out reason.

Taking morals out of metaphors and experiences within the Bible is quality. Imposing morals on others that one translates from a literal interpretation of the Bible because the "Word of God" isn't. It may be a questionable train, considering one have got to make a decision which morals within the Bible will have to be obeyed and which is not going to, which fairly comes all the way down to cherry picking out the passages that a man or woman concurs with. Anyone in want of slavery? The Bible approves. If the Bible is the Word of God, then the entire factor have got to be obeyed, which could lead to a few irrelevant and unlawful habits.

You get thumbs down because society doesn't know the difference between immoral and moral. For the last few generations, society has been inundated with sex and violence in what they see and hear. Children have grown up with it and accept it as being normal, generation after generation.

Anyone who sees things in the light of it being right or wrong, moral or immoral are considered weirdos. They are mocked and ridiculed.

The standard of today's society is no longer the standard it was in years past. Today's society has become caught up in a life style that is one of self-pleasing self. Live for today, society is yelling, don't consider what sorrows tomorrow will bring.

I admire you for your having morals, ethics and a conscience. Don't let go of them, they are valuable.

My "answers" similar to yours. I talk about saving sex for marriage, being faithful to your spouse no matter what, marriage is a committment regardless of how you might "feel" about someone else....

I'm so used to getting negative reactions in real life I've been pleasantly surprised by the positive thumbs up I get. Thumbs down are usually 1 or 0.

Don't let "them" discourage you. Stand by your convictions and don't hesitate to tell it like it is. Who cares if you get thumbs down.

Also, I'm pleased to see so many people giving me "best answer". I think many of those who post are like you and I and they need that affirmation. IF you don't give it and all they get is the immoral side, who knows? You may be the difference, the little boost of encouragement that they need.

Keep up the good work!!!
