I guess my question wasn't exactly clear...I was referring to the problems caused for Indian actress Shilpa Shetty when Richard Gere surprised her with a kiss on her cheek at a public event in April....

I agree with this answerer. It's out of respect. Besides, doesn't he travel annually or whatever to India? Shouldn't he have known?
I know I would have found it extremely disrespectful.
Of course, Shilpa Shetty wasn't even expecting it. I don't think that it should be so bad for her. But I don't live there, so I don't know.

I dont know what he really was looking for. May be he wanted to be funny, but hasnt been funny at all.
He has to know which the uses in India are, but disrespected them. Also, he isnt a gentleman, bcoz put the lady in a very bad situation and left her to face all by herself.
That is not the way a real man acts.
She didnt expect the kiss at all...........and even it seemed that he wouldnt finish kissing her.
He is now a Budist, and has to know how eastern religions and uses are.
He has no excuses to have done what he did.

It was really a joke here in the news, but I think RG should have known better. I mean when you travel and work in foreign countries you have to know their customs and rules. You can't just go about willey nilley and expect things to be fine.

I think he should have stepped in and spoke up in her defense. I think it is unfair to her since she did not instigate the kiss. He should be a man and admit when he is wrong or did something that is perceived as wrong.

she got in trouble and there was a hearing about that kiss and I think she faced some charges like had to pay a fine to keep her out of jail
