This is a rather simple question.

I own a 2000 Toyota Corolla.
About 2 or 3 months ago, my BRAKE light on the dash has been going on. But it would only go on for about two seconds and then flash off. And it didn't come back on for another month. Well here recently... probably about two weeks ago... the BRAKE light has been staying on. It only turns off once in awhile... but mostly stays on.

No sounds are being made when I hit my brakes.
No abnormalities.
No nothing, really? They seem fine?

Why is my car doing this?

I'm going to take it in to get looked at in a week... (when I get paid.) And on that topic, how much do you think it would cost for something like this? If you have the diagnosis?

I hear it's kind of pricey.
I really don't have that much money, to be honest.
But my car is MY LIFE. :)

Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.
Thanks.

-Emma.

I would think that you either have low brake fluid or you may need new pads, or quite possibly both. It shouldn't be too much. Just be careful about people trying to sell you services that you don't need. Get a second opinion if the price gets too high. Get estimates before you OK the work.

good luck.

On most newer model cars there is a brake fluid level system where it monitors the brake fluid level. When you are driving down the road as you go around curves the brake fluid moves around in the reservoir. If you get low on brake fluid if the fluid is not moving around and is level in the reservoir the brake light will come on to let you know that you need to check it.

In some brake pads there is this wire that when the pad wear down to that wire the brake light will come on to let you know that you need new pads.

These 2 things are probably what caused your brake light to come.

The brake fluid you can buy at gas stations or an auto store such as Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly's Auto Parts, Autozone, or Napa. Make sure it is DOT 3 brake fluid. Usually it will cost $2-$6 depending on the size of the container its in. Your can find out where the reservoir is by looking in your owners manual.

Hope this helps!

Check the brake fluid, maybe low. It has a low and high marks. A can of fluid is cheap to get and you can do that yourself. Read your Owner's Manual to see where the reservoir is located and how to service.

On newer cars they come with a float that tells when is low. The fluid is moving back and forth so... is on the border line of low or add line. That is why flashes when gets back to level. The brake pads wears down so the fluid gets lower... you get the pic.

The Owner's Manual tells what the lights means on the dashboard and will tell when the brake light comes on what are the possible causes and shows you on what to check.

Low brake fluid could indicate brake pad wear ? Be careful where you go for repairs. Midas is seldom the cheapest, but you can get a free brake inspection. Dont let them scare you.Dont be shy to get a second opinion. Independents can be as much of a rip off as anyone I don't believe dealers are the rip off some think. I work at one and only want to provide honest resonable service.Mind you it varies from person to person and dealer to dealer be careful. Brakes can run from 150.- to oh-my god. You likley should not be at oh my god probably the lower end for front pads and service rotors don't wait to long it can only make thing worse

Fluid is the first to check, minor lead at the Master Cylinder or "T" block on the brake line near the cylinder, there is a switch in the "T" block with one wire, is loose or braking? Fluid leak at wheels, backing plates under car?
What ever it is Emma it does sound minor but monitor it!

the brake lit is probly on due to low fluid in the master cyl. you need to have your brakes checked as to that is an indacation of low or wore down brake pads
