I'm not sure if you really need to know about the 1979, but I"m going to assume so.

What most people call Bandit Editions came out in 1976, as the 50th anniversary Pontiac. Inflation was extremely high from 1976 to 1979, so the prices are quite different for those 4 years. They rose from $6000 to $10,000 for a typical one during that period.

A 79 Trans Am started out at $6699. The special edition package added $1329 - it was expensive. So theoretically that would be $8028. Many people will tell you that all the cars came loaded, but that's a lie. For $8000 you would have had standard vinyl interior, no air conditioning, no radio, standard suspension, and crank windows. So a typical 79 Special Edition was about $10,000. They're all different in exact price.

Dodge Man is talking about something else, I think. If you were talking about the aftermarket Bandit T/A's made in Cherry Hill, NJ by Trans Am Specialties, then he's probably right. I don't think they came out until 1980, though.

RE:
how much did the 1979 pontiac trans am bandit edition cost when it first came out?

They were 6300 for a new 79 Trans Am in the fairly basic dress--the bandit was 9000 with the bells and whistles. My first Suburban was 12000----now they are 50,000. A house used to cost that much. My first 62 Chevy was 2600, my 66 Mustang was 4500, my 66 Plymouth was 3500, My antique 1948 Plymouth was 1000, my two used state police cars were 500 each--440 Plymouth Fury models. My 1993 Grand Prix was 25000, my 95 olds was 17000.
