I'm looking to buy a new home in Southern California -- Palm Desert/La Quinta or San Diego. There are several builders competing for my business. How can I find out about their reputations?

Go to the actual developments and see the ones under construction .
If you are unfamiliar with building methods ,
Have a home inspector go with you and give you a lesson .

ask for references and call every single one of them. a reputable contractor will have no problem giving them to you, and the people you contact should only have good things to say about them.
