Boot sector of hard drive is messed up. If you are using XP, try this repair:
http://www.informationweek.com/shared/printableArticle.jhtml?articleID=189400897
ALL files will be intact.
If a repair would not work, the hard drive could be physically damaged. You might still be able to recover your files by using that drive as slave.

Don't panic ! This happened to me a couple of days ago. I feared the worst but somehow the computer bios had been corrupted which removed the entry for the hard disk, so it was trying to boot from the CD ROM. Hence the failure message.
I don't have the room here to go through it with you unfortunately, but if you really get stuck then send me an email. But don't assume you lost all your data or your disk is destroyed.

Your boot-sector was probably corrupted by your hard shutdown.
We can only guess which operating system you're using, which is critical information needed to answer your question.
You should be able to restart your computer with your installation disk. You'll want to run the "Repair", rather than "New Installation" wizard.
The system will more than likely check the disk for errors, so the installation may take a while.

Boot disk failure often means that the hard drive has physically failed. If you're running XP, try to boot off the install CD and see if it sees the install in the repair console. You may just need to rewrite the boot record. If it doesn't see the install, there's a good chance the drive is dead.

it depends what does it do after it says boot disk failure if it goes into a disk scanning utility let it run its course its for the best but if not then get your hands on a linux cd with a live cd peforably ubuntu(fastest boot times most stable) google it option this will let u run the os on the disc and then mount youre windows drive and copy any important files to any external drive or you can try the windows cd that came with your machine called a repair cd i havent used it all that much but its sorta in a way like the linux cd

the bad shut down probably either corrupted some windows files or completely deleted them altogether.
get a boot disk and try to copy any necessary files off the hard drive, then re-install windows
