We manage an apartment complex next to our school and really can't afford to move in the near future. We are concerned because the apartment has poor ventilation, off and on cockroach issues and asbestos ceilings. It is a very old, very cheaply constructed place. Which aspects of the building should we be most concerned with and are there any ideas for ways we can improve the place before baby comes? Please be nice, we are doing the best we can and hope to be out of here as soon as possible.

When we moved in 2 years ago, we had to sign a led paint and an asbestos disclosure/waiver.

They're not that healthy. There could be mold in the air or lead paint.

The other things you mention could cause problems; their lungs are underdeveloped and can easily be harmed by things in the air, and roaches carry disease.

The main thing to worry about in older homes is lead based paint. If they chip it off and eat it they can get VERY sick. If the home is newer than 1968 (I think) then it shouldn't have any.

The housing authority would know for sure on the date, because they check that for all people that they pay for.

The only other thing I would keep an eye on is if any of the asbestos material comes off the ceiling.

Old homes have a bad reputation...but as long as they are well maintained.....there is nothing wrong with them.

I would have the apartment checked for mold and the thing with older places also is whether there is lead paint used which could be a health hazard. All you can do is get it checked. I know for the lead paint(can be found in window seals) is free of charge to get checked out in most cities. Good luck apartment hunting!

I would be worried about asbestos, lead paint and mold and mildew. I thought it was against the law to rent anything with asbestos, anywhere. Are you sure the ceilings are not cellulose instead of asbestos.

sorry about the ventilation, don't think it is a major problem. Do however find out when the place was built, the complex must disclose if lead paint was used to paint the place. Lead is very dangerous for small kids.

as far as your financial status is not too stable, well, you can still settle that apartment maybe for some few months until you are capable for moving to a little bit presentable one. for me, it doesnt matter a lot if what kind of house i have or to other people, important for me is to keep it clean, tidy and things must be well-arrange i mean i hate messy house. just make it sure to clean it as often as you want, its just for the sake of your baby.
