I plan on buying a mini after I am out of college, and would like my horse to be able to stay inside with me for at least a few hours each day, much like a very large dog would.
I know that there is a way to housetrain a miniature horse, but I can't seem to find any web articles that say how to go about doing it. Has anyone done this before?

In case anyone is curious, I have grown up owing horses, so I know that my horse would need plenty of time in at least a very large yard each day.

Thank you for all your advice and references!

I know that they are used for seeing eye horses, instead of dogs. So they sure can be trained!!! Don't listen to those whacked out people!!! Just do a lot of research. Or find a place where they train the minis to be seeing eye horses & ask them. Good luck!!!

There is a way to housetrain your horse, and minis are being used successfully as guides/aides for the disabled. Here is a link to a guide horse website, which has links that you could find helpful. http://www.guidehorse.org/horses_house.htm

Good luck!

in london and other large cities where they do horse and carriage rides, to prevent the horses fouling the streets they have a little bag that attaches around the tail and catches the poo, you could try that i guess.
i have never heard of a housetrained horse though lol

I guess I cant really help you except give you moral support. I do know of one lady my dad worked for who had a pet mini and she would stomp her foot once if she wanted to go outside and twice if she HAD to 'GO' lol
I know there are a lot of service horses popping up because of peoples allergies to dogs, but I have no idea how they trained them.
Sorry I can't give you more help!!'
Good luck
(Honestly, if people don't like the idea of you having a pet of your choice why can they just leave it...instead of get all mad about it!! lol)

Doesn't matter how small it is, if you know horses as you say, you must know that even a miniature horse is still a horse and not a big dog! Would you try to keep a Shire inside and housetrain it? Of course not, minis are no different, they still have horse brains and you would be doing the animal a disservice by treating it any other way. Please reconsider your motives in wanting to do this.

im not sure if house training is a good idea. minis can be rather aggressive. though you have horse experience, i dont think that i would go through with it. but if you are determined try looking it up on google.

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH YOU? JUST BUY A LARGE SHOVEL, USE AS NEEDED. HOPEFULLY HE'LL HAVE MORE PLACES TO GO THAN YOUR SILLY HOUSE.
