.Well if you are a cop you're trained to know these things. Its almost impossible to tell if someone is lying on the computer unless you have telekinetic abilities. On the phone you can tell by tone changes(up & down) and/ or stuttering or jumping over words. But up close and personal is the easiest way to know if a person is lying by: shifting body direction, eye contact, looking away while speaking or putting their head down. But be careful, these are the same actions of someone with low self- esteem or anxioty. You just have to know.

A good person, if "forced to fabricate", will tend not to make eye contact, preferring to look at the floor.
If they try to look you in the eye, I find they go blinking furiously.
Fortunately I don't know any cold blooded liars. praise God that I don't have that.
If a person is a liar, you can easily tell when they fib, because their lips are moving.
A true story. My wife caught our son in a lie when he was young enough to believe in magic.
He asked mom "How could you tell"?
Cecellia told him "It's written all over your face"! A typical comment by a mother, said with enthusiastic fervour, so he never lies again.
Greg believed her. He WAS that young. He quickly rubbed his forehead (as if removing dirt) and asked urgently: "Where?!?"
Precious.

On IM, phone conversation, and a letter, you really just can't tell. But face to face, there is a possibility. I read in a study somewhere that people who lie tend to look to their left/right/down, and not really look straight in the face. They also fidget a little, but that's probably only if they're telling a really big lie or something.
I dunno

Sotakemeaslam got it pretty good. I like to check the evidence. By the way, I rarely look people straight in the eyes, unless they've pissed me off and I've gone into hunting mode. Look for a very slight squinting of the left eye for indications of that.

In a face-to-face conversation, if someone doesn't look me in the eye, I'm inclined to believe they're not being honest with me. It's harder to tell with other ways, but time should tell with those circumstances.

Have a long memory and cross reference everything they say. Pepper them with questions. Get the other side of the story. Ask them about a detail that you KNOW the answer to and they don't know that you DO know and then see what they say. If they say something that you know is inaccurate or untrue then you will KNOW for sure that they are lying.

In face to face, there is body language. Do a search on body language cues when someone is lying.

As a rule it is a gut feeling.
It is far easier face to face as a person who is well schooled in language is very hard to spot in writing.

The best way is to follow your gut instincts. You will pick up cues and hints just from the way things are said to you. If it sounds unbelieveable to YOU, then chances are, it's a lie.
