There are two major components of the membrane: Lipid and Protein. Each has a department where is is formed: Lipid in the smooth ER and protein in rough surfaced ER.the carbohydrate moiety is added in Golgi complex. After the formation there is sorting and alignment.

they're formed from the vesicles in the golgi and other organelles used to carry protein to the membrane surface. they're synthesized from fatty acids taken up by the cell.
