Just because someone lives in despair does not mean they lack intelligence and the ability to use that intelligence to move beyond a life of "quiet desperation."
There are many people who live in despair and still have meaningful lives: For instance: People with family or children that love them and depend on them and who would miss them if they were gone. That's certainly meaningful.
People who live in despair do not have meaningless lives, as Doug above (who sounds like an oaf) would have you believe. That was a very cold, callous statement to make. There are circumstances beyond our control, like Katrina, for instance which, undoubtedly, caused a great deal of despair for all the people who lost their homes, pets, loved ones, but that doesn't mean their lives are meaningless.

They live in despair precisely -because- their life has no meaning.
You're getting the cart before the horse and confusing 'cause' with 'effect'.

Life is not an existential expression. Living life, we influence everything we come in contact with. It makes everything meaningful...even if we are unable to perceive the meaning.

You have things happen, but it's up to you how you choose to interpret it, as good, bad, or neutral.
