I've heard Stalin purged most of his "friends"- arresting and sending them to labor camps- during his rule, and he never forgave them due to his ruthlessness to eliminate enemies of the state.

Stalin had no friends. He was isolated for most of his reign. Everybody was scared to death of this guy. He would wipe out whole groups on a whim.
