When RJ Umberger got hit with his head down a couple of yrs back its funny how the announcers of that game, as well as the league, and players all said in this league you have to keep your head up....but, when Dean Mccammond gets leveled by Steve Downie its a dirty hit....He left his feet when they collided obviously the hit was a hard hit and no point before point of impact is he jumping or leaving his feet....its kinda like the check Mike Richards had on Petrovicky....And also at no point was his elbow sticking out...Dean Mccammond obviously had he head down and Steve Downie took advantage of it...Brian Mccgrattan would have done it himself so, he should shut his candy *** up...Anyone in the league would have taken the same shot if they had it...

Players get hit with their heads down and get concussions all the time. Downie's hit was over the line although not as much as the media would have everyone believe. This has absolutely nothing to do with whether it was a flyers player or not that did the hitting. Obviously you're a passionate fan but this media attention isn't an attack on Philly. I stated in a post for a related question that Downie is a victim of the leagues new hard stance on hits to the head. He would not be recieving the same attention a year ago for the same hit. Bad timing for Downie, that's all. Well.....that and the fact that he's a dirty little ******, that is heading for a suspension filled career anyway.

I agree with DC Fury....Be a fan of the game and realize when even your own players deserve discipline.

Wow, all I can say is... Wow. This single incident is blowing my mind. I am a life long Flyers fan and reading your question actually makes me embarrassed of that for the first time ever.

How can you possibly compare Campbell's hit on Umberger to what Downie did? They aren't even in the same league. For starters, Umberger was carrying the puck over his own blue line with his head down. Campbell hit him with his shoulder without ever leaving his feet.

Watch the Downie video again.

Pause it before the impact and see where Downie is. He so clearly jumped that it isn't even funny. In addition to that, he ran him from beyond the top of the circles. He earned and deserves a suspension. He should not be crucified like some people around the NHL are stating, but there is no way you can tell me that hit was in any way clean.

If you don't think Downies hit was dirty then you are a brick short a load.
It was a cheap shot by a player who is a marginal NHLer at best even though he obviously wears your beloved white and orange.
McGratten at least will be coming at Downie when Downies head is up, up front and face to face.
Downie obviously has no respect for other players in the league and the game has no room for jerks like that.

To be fair, Downie "launched" himself at McAmmond and was 2 feet off the ice. Happens all the time but supposedly this is a new day in the NHL and they are going to make an example out of the kid.
I do not buy this whole thing where he had him targeted the whole time and "stalked" his hit. So what if he did? Players should be aware of their surroundings. I personally don't think a player should be judged for lining a guy up, even if he has to skate 100 feet to do it. Part of the game. The whole leaving his feet and launching himself like a football hit is not though.

Probably because Scott Stevens didn't need a dirty hit or to leave is feet to knock Lindros out. The hit on Umberger is not even close to similar. As to leaving his feet, had he (Downie) not been in the process of leaving his feet to deliver the hit he would not have become airborne. A little thing called Gravity would have ensured he stayed firmly planted to old Terra Firma.

Downie wasn't trying to protect a one goal lead in the deciding game of the Stanley Cup Finals and even then that's hardly an excuse. I don't care if I'm a Flyers fan and that knucklehead plays for them. It was uncalled for and clearly meant to hurt.

I already don't like him because of his idiotic conduct in the OHL. As for the other Flyers that have had concussions, well, that's life on the pond. A player will get injured if he plays enough and even those who have a "sixth sense" of what is going on around them can and will be subjected to a blindside hit on occasion.

Hockeypassion should stay away from the cappuchino for a while.

Probably because the two hits were different. If you leave your feet it's going too be a penalty if you don't and just hit the person then it's a clean play. Just like in football you make a hard hit you better not be leading with your helmet in the face of a receiver, qb, or running back.

it wasn't the fact that his head was down it's the fact that a player skated at full speed from the blue line, launched him self in the air and destroyed Mccammond. have some respect for the game and don't just go with everything your team does. I'm a caps fan but i would fully support the suspension of any cap that delivered a hit like that even if it was Ovechkin with one game left in the Stanley Cup.

wow, everyone has voiced a good opinion on this one, but i feel i have to get my two cents in.......how can you compare the two? lets see,

one had playoff implications, the other was preseason - no similarity.

both guys hit hard and play hard - similarity

both guys heads were down - similarity

umberger had the puck, mcammond had played the puck - no similarity

downie left his feet and hit mcammond, cambell skated through umberger

All that aside, no one is going to admit that their player made a dirty play during a game - Murray is a prime example, last year he defended Neil for headhunting Drury, this year he is begging for action (Not that those two hits are super comparable other than that they involved a head injury).

Never thought id agree with bob but that was some spammin goin on below him.....gawd.................
However any hit like that should be illegal when it is to the head of any sort, the players should have more respect for one another and they all have families to feed.......however for every 4 great players there is always 1 dummy who doesnt know what the edge really is.
