thinking they're the best team in the league or whatever since DAY 1
if they had the US against the world approach, they would do much better

They are probably the most complacent team I have seen since the Oakland A's of the late 80's/early 90's. I think they go out assuming that they will win. Every time the Braves or Phillies have made a run they have held them off and increased their lead showing in those glimpses that they are better, but eventually that insouciance catches up with you. Their lineup is the best in the National League when they are on, but typically they have a few guys who don't show up every night - think of it this way: if all 8 hitters (excluding the pitcher) came to play like Wright and Reyes they wouldn't have any problems; and I don't mean just statistically - Wright and Reyes play hard. You put your finger on the bullpen, but I think you can extend that to their starting pitching as well. Perez has pitched way above his ceiling, but when Oliver Perez is your ace you are either in trouble or at the very least lacking depth - you just can't rely on Pedro and Glavine every 5 days - some days they will have it, some days they won't. Those A's won one World Series. Most people in the know will tell you they should have won a few, but there egos and carelessness brought them down. Kind of seems like a parallel for the Mets. Hard to see them holding off the Phillies unless someone in the clubhouse shakes them up. David Wright is probably the only hope they have of that.

The starters are flaming, the hitting is at a Class AA level and the signs of a collapse were there before the All-Star break when the Mets could not put away the slumping Phillies and Braves with one sustained run of wins. As popular as Randolph is, he doesn't have a job in 2008 if the club loses the division over the weekend.

You don't leave me any options....It is there F'in Bullpen!!!! Hitting and runs are above avg. Maybe starting pitching could be tighter, but the bullpen is killing me!!!!
