With a round tower, no matter what direction the wind comes from, it never strikes a flat surface. Hence round ones weather storms better.

They are typically built in coastal regions where wind-force tends to be strong. The rounded shape tends to deflect the force of winds and protects the integrity of the structure.
The Pharos at Alexandria was the most famous lighthouse in history. It was one of the Seven Wonders. It was squared-off and is no more. But earthquakes should probably take the blame for that.
