It seems like the family computer kills power supplies for fun....back in june there was a thunderstorm and the power went off ( it wasnt plugged into a surge protector at the time). It worked fine for about 3 hours until i opened it up and added a gig of RAM. I plugged it back in and it didnt work. I figured out the power supply was dead and i had to buy a new one.

Aroudn that same time i was workin on the computer im using right now(A great machine btw). So i fixed the other one and put it in the living room. Now a day ago my sisters said the computer was running really really slow. It was completley infested with viruses (Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Adware, Malware) everything....I tried using virus scanners and deleting everything manually but they just kept coming back.

I decided to just do a complete system restore and everything went fine. Until I i opened it up to remove the PCi adapter card. I closed it up and plugged it in. It started up and worked fine.

Ok so i shut it off because i had just removed programs that had come with the computer. I tried to turn it back on but it would not. I tmade the same noises it had made the last time and i realised the power supply was dead. I tried plugging it in somewhere else but it still didnt do anything.....Now i have to buy ANOTHER new power supply....

What is going on why do the power supplies keep dieng?!? Both times when i opened it i didnt even come close to touching it and they still die....

Also after the first time i bought a surge protector for it so that couldnt of been it.

Is there a reason they died?

Power supplies have many variables, the more pricey ones have a built in voltage regulator, plus other features such as more 12 volt power rails. Point is, if these are cheap power supplies, and your power companies lead in voltage varies too much,(such as they're allowed a varience from 108 volts AC, to 127 volts AC), it'll heat up the transformer in the PSU, and damage it,(and/or wreak havoc with the electrocytic capacitors!) The voltage regulator tries to keep the voltage constant. Also I don't know how true it is, but recently I was informed by a 'converted' hacker that he used to put viruses, and such out there to max out people's computers, making their PSU's, and processors run all out, until the computer 'burned' out. (What a freak!) Your surge protector is probably not as good as one thinks. Lightning surges have at least a 100,000 volts of DC, or more. The best bet is to un-plug,(NOT turn off the surge protector switch, but UNPLUG!) (Also recommend keeping the system clean with can of air, fans, processors, motherboards, etc.)

It is possible that the viruses affected the power supply. But it is more likely that the power supply was only barely sufficient for the pc, and any extra load killed it. I would upgrade the power supply, to way past the sytem's max requirements, and be done with it. More power won't hurt anything, it's just the ability to supply the current that is in question.

The motherboard's can die also, especially when hit by a thunder storm.

Please invest in a good UPS backup system/power conditioner and safe yourself lots of trouble.

OR you could just be overloading your power supply. They may not be dead, overload protection is just working and doing auto shutoff so as not to fry anything. Consider this cheap but good one:

Yes, schooling would educate you this and extra! I wager your mum and dad deserted you due to the fact you requested questions like this? Public tuition has failed you. In Russia, laptop is you.

that happened to me, its the motherboard. you can get it replaced but you are better of buying a new computer.
