Liberals DO NOT hate religion (sandmanamerica)! What we do believe is that the public school classroom is not the right place to teach it. In this melting pot of America, there can be many different religious beliefs among thirty or so students, with the teacher who may, or may not, be any one of those. If you allowed every religion to declare "holy" days, you might have a lot of days off! Freedom of religion is only effective if all are treated equally important, including the freedom to NOT believe in organized religion.

Our constitution and the first amendment does not say anything about the free exercise of religion. It is about not having an established religion.

Public schools have tried to follow through and usually do nothing to favor one religion over another because that would be considered as establishment.

The school itself cannot exercise use of a religion. But the schools cannot by law stop any student from observing?practicing his/her religion while they are in attendance of that school.
EX. If a student requires a time to pray or have an individual or group religious rite with others the school cannot by law hinder that. Schools cannot stop after school bible study groups or any other after school religious group gathering.

I don't believe that it is protected at all. What is protected is the absence of any reference to God or religion of any kind. Since religion is an integral part of many of our lives this creates a dilemma for many people. Religious references are treated in much the same way as foul language.

NO NO NO--those that would keep God out of the classroom are really hatemongers in disguise, and to take out the words UNDER GOD from our Pledge of Allegiance when recited in schools? What gives them the right to do that?
