hello,

my motherboard states, that to enable dual channel mode, memory of the same "type and density" is needed in both colour-coordinated slots. [4 slots, 2 blue x 2 black]

now does this mean if i have a Hynix DDR400 (512mb) and a Hynix DDR400 (1gb) that they will run dual channel? [1.5gb] or do they have to be same capacity too?? i.e 1gbx1gb, or 512x512?

it means you have to put the same amount in sets of 2 i.e. in the black if you put 1gb in one you got to put it in the one too and it has to match
now the blue has to match too but the amount can be different than the black

You can still run dual channel with different size sticks of ram but it is always better to run 2 sticks of the same exact ram to avoid stabilty problems. The ram in dual channel kits is no different than single sticks of ram other than they are both exactly the same. Just dont run 3 sticks like 2 512s in one channel and a 1GB in the other because 3 sticks will make it single channel. Last thing you should do thou is run 2 different types or size rams as their latencies and voltage requirements are different so you dont have a smooth flow thru your memory like you do with matched sets.

You need a MATCHED pair (same size/same speed) to run dual channel mode. 1x1Gb and 1x512mb will always run on single channel mode. 2x1Gb plus 2x512mb on the right slots will run on dual channel mode.
