Someone said that to me the other day and I was just wondering shouldn't it be fruitier than a fruit cake?

Good point! But, the saying is, "Nutty as a fruitcake", because, after all, fruit cakes do contain nuts, WALnuts, at least.
At any rate, I do believe that the person whom that is directed at could be declared to be FRUITY as well as NUTTY.

No, as others have said, fruitcakes have lots of nuts in them as well as fruits.
