Well, yes, it depends on the school district and private schools wear uniforms, period,
When I was in private school, the girls wore khaki, navy blue, or red plaid jumpers (gastly, those things were). We were also allowed to wear khaki pants, a red school shirt, and we could only wear white tennis shoes.

Most of the time, private schools will have uniforms. I know of a number of schools in my area though that do not have full uniforms, but instead have strict dress codes: No shorts (they either have to be knee-length for some schools, or longer than fingertips for others), no sleeveless tops, or if tops are sleeveless they have to be 3 fingers wide. Also the neckline cannot be more than two inches below the collarbone.

Where I live, public elementary and high school don't have uniforms. Just a basic dress code. For example: no spaghetti straps or skirts or shorts shorter than finger tip and some other basic rules. In middle school however, we had a dress code but not uniforms. We had to wear a solid colored polo and it had to be tucked in. We didn't have to wear khakis though.

public [free] schools usually do not have uniforms.
private [paid] or Catholic schools almost always do. it's usually a blouse and a jumper/dress thing [girls] or a polo shirt and trousers [boys] for elementary school [kindergarten-5th grade], and a polo shirt, skirt, and knee socks [girls] and a polo shirt and trousers [boys] for middle school [6th-8th grade]
