Because they need something. He may be teething if he is putting his fists in his mouth. Try putting a CLEAN washcloth under cold water and then up into the freezer for a little bit..take it out and then offer it to him so that he can chew on it.

He may just be needing comforted so calm down and just hold him and rock him.

Why not cry? Ever notice how incredibly hard it is to ignore that crying? How you just want to help a kid crying? It is the most stressful sound in our lives to deal with, and it gets immediate attention - which is good since babies often need immediate attention. All those other actions that a baby could do just do not illicit the same response, and they're just too dang subtle.

There are some babies that don't cry much, and sometimes they cry because we have not idea why (colicky babies), some babies don't cry because their needs are instantly met. Actually I know two little boys who did not cry much (other then colic) because I knew beforehand what they needed - they told me in various ways - such as the pooping face meant they needed a diaper change, rubbing their eyes meant they needed a nap, etc...

Did you know that most babies have different cries for different needs? And most folks can tell just by listening what a cry means! But then some babies don't have a different cry, just one for general need and another for pain (like when they got their shots or have an ear infection).

Pay attention to your brother, watch what he does and what soothes him, you will learn how to differentiate the cries.

The reason a baby cries is to vocalize its needs. The sound of a crying baby will make a mother who breast feeds 'let down' her milk. Crying is natures way to exercises the vocal cords as well as expand the lungs and help to expectorate fluid in the lungs. The sounds made when a baby cries are the first sounds toward speech. Actually if you have a baby yourself you learn the 'language' of his or her cry. Pretty amazing stuff huh?

infant babies can only communicate one way! crying ....

if a baby is well fed, clean, dry and loved it won't cry much;
if a baby has teeth coming in, is hungry, wet, and no one around to help it out, it will cry.

conditioned response to surroundings I guess

They cry because they need a diaper change,hunger,want to be held. They can't just say this words so they have to use there signs to let use know.

To communicate. When they cry they are trying to tell you that their bellies hurt, they're tired, bored, lonely, hungry,etc.

If your baby is crying alot try swaddling, shushing, swaying, laying her on your side, and giving a pacifier to suck on.

They do all those other things and cry. Crying catches your attention more. They want to tell you they are hungry, tired, and etc.

Because it gets our attention. Would you change a babies diaper if he burped at you? LOL
