Basically the manufacturers don't sell as many bottom-freezer refrigerators as they do the top mount ones... The production costs are about the same, but the sales are lower... in turn it's more of a specialty item...

The french door styles are a new concept. We looked at them for our new home but in the end even though I would have gained so much more width for platters and other prep, I just didn't like the bottom freezer. I went with a larger side by side instead and am very happy. If the concept catches on, the prices will come down. They always do.

i agree with kirk, and would only add that it is easier for a top freezer to deliver the cold air to a lower food compartment, than to pump the cold up to a top food compartment. that requires more ducts and a larger fan motor.

That's what is hot and its just a simple case of supply and demand. If you want it the manufacturer knows you will pay for it.
