I was born in England, with 3 Irish grandparents, and i have lived in the capital of Wales for the last 20 years.
I want to seek out the things that unite people, not the things that split them apart and set them against each other - so Gordon Brown talking about 'Britain' is encouraging, because Britishness, despite the imperialist history, is now about being united, being accepted and being considered part of something good.
The Nationalists who want Little England, Wales or Scotland want to divide people into subsections and set them against each other. Encouraging a definition of 'English' as white, or Welsh as 'welsh-speaking' or Scots as anti-english, is divisive and ignores what Britain can become - successful because of its openness and multi-cultural character.
So i'm with Gordon Brown on this, a patriotism that does not set people against each other is a hugely positive thing.
Britishness is about being part of the world, not just of some little part of it.

When certain groups hide behind nationalism to further their own political agenda then that isn't acceptable.
You know what I'm talking about, second suspect. And you can't even accept constructive criticism!

For sure. Just read about Manuel Noriega, Oliver North, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, or watch a couple of hours of Fox TV.

But patriotism can lead to hatredism

Look at Germans in WW2

Look at patriotic Brits zenophobia

Its okay to be patriotic to extent- supporting sports teams- but to much can be dangerous

patriotism is not the last refuge, its a forbidden place, but only if your English, and because we English, are not allowed to be patriotic, and accused of being racist if we dare be proud of our race nation, and heritage. but if after all that we dare to still say we are white, English and proud, and they run out of Nazi jibes, we get idiots like you ask idiot questions like this.
