I was born in England, with 3 Irish grandparents, and i have lived in the capital of Wales for the last 20 years.
I want to seek out the things that unite people, not the things that split them apart and set them against each other - so Gordon Brown talking about 'Britain' is encouraging, because Britishness, despite the imperialist history, is now about being united, being accepted and being considered part of something good.
The Nationalists who want Little England, Wales or Scotland want to divide people into subsections and set them against each other. Encouraging a definition of 'English' as white, or Welsh as 'welsh-speaking' or Scots as anti-english, is divisive and ignores what Britain can become - successful because of its openness and multi-cultural character.
So i'm with Gordon Brown on this, a patriotism that does not set people against each other is a hugely positive thing.
Britishness is about being part of the world, not just of some little part of it.
