He speaks very little english, and cannot read or write in either english or spanish. I only work with him for a 1/2 hr a week, and he does not have a bilingual instructor. I am, however, bilingual in spanish. any suggestions on how I should help him learn to read and write in English?

Try giving him flashcards with different words every day. Let him take them home to study and then read to him and show him the pictures. You might want to use a phonics learning system. Let him sound out every letter in the alphabet so that he can put them together in a word. I am also bilingual and went through ESL and had to learn little by little. Let me know how else I can help. By the way what state are you in?

If you can get access to a computer, try this with him. It really works. I have loads of students in this situation and I have them work on this site. Teachers who are good with computers should know about this site anyways.
